GET INVOLVED
Some ways you can participate in the Math community…
MBAMP
The Monterey Bay Area Math Project: Unleashing the Joy of Math : building community, empowering teachers, inspiring wonder in every learner. MBAMP sponsors many events, notably Math Circles for students and teachers.
CalTeach @ UCSC
As part of UCSC’s commitment to supporting K-12 STEM education, CalTeach places university science, math, and engineering majors in K-12 classrooms, and helps many of these interns go on to become teachers. As a result, school children benefit from innovative and engaged teachers who are committed to meeting their educational needs.
Experiences in Math
A series of speakers (and participants) discussing their experiences navigating the math world, academia, and industry as members of underrepresented groups. Taken together, these sessions will be a conversation, presenting perspectives and hopefully creating dialogue. Come join the conversation!
Slugs United by Mathematics (SUM)
is a student organization which brings together like-minded peers who are interested in mathematics. Meetings occur every week. These meetings provide an opportunity for members to socialize, talk about math and science, and build a sense of community and belonging at UC Santa Cruz. All majors are welcome; no mathematics skills required ! SUM is on Instagram | Email | Discord.
Putnam Competition
The Putnam is a prestigious university-level mathematics competition by exam held annually in the United States and Canada. It is designed to test creativity, knowledge, and mathematical problem-solving skills. You can find out more at the competition’s page or the link above. Would-be participants are encouraged to take MATH 101 as preparation.
Directed Reading Program
Math’s DRP pairs experienced graduate students with motivated undergraduates to meet weekly and discuss a topic of their choice. This is a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to learn material not offered in classes, and for graduate students to contribute their expertise and gain experience in outreach and mentoring.
Association for Women in Mathematics
AWM’s purpose is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors and to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences. UCSC’s chapter is part of the national organization.
American Institute of Mathematics
AIM is a mathematical sciences research institute supported by the NSF (National Science Foundation). It’s located on the campus of Caltech, in the Richard N. Merkin Center. They host a large number of programs and projects in Pasadena, CA. See the American Institute of Mathematics’s website for more details.
National Association of Mathematicians
The National Association of Mathematicians (NAM) is a non-profit professional organization in the mathematical sciences. Its membership is open to all persons interested in the mission of NAM. NAM promotes excellence in the mathematical sciences, and the mathematical development of all underrepresented groups.
SACNAS
There is a future where STEM reflects the demographics of our country, so the field is better equipped to solve our world’s most pressing problems. Through our people, programs, and partnerships, SACNAS has taken a radical approach to lead with culture and identity as the means to achieve true diversity in STEM.
Math Alliance
The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences (“Math Alliance”) is a community of math sciences faculty and students with the following goals: To increase the number of doctoral degrees in the quantitative sciences among groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in those fields.
The American Mathematical Society
AMS is dedicated to connecting the diverse global mathematical community through publications, meetings and conferences, MathSciNet, professional services, advocacy, and awareness programs. AMS is a society of students and professionals who are advancing research, supporting learning & careers, and building mathematical community.
Spectra
The Association for LGBTQ+ mathematicians, and their allies. This group arose from a need for recognition and community for Gender and Sexual Minority mathematicians. Spectra hopes to be a resource for our community. Check back as the organization grows and evolves!
