Major Qualification Policy
Admission to the mathematics majors (all concentrations) and minor is contingent on students successfully passing the following introductory courses or their equivalents:
- MATH 19A (Calculus for STEM), or MATH 20A (Honors Calculus)
- MATH 19B, (Calculus for STEM), or MATH 20B (Honors Calculus)
- MATH 21 (Linear Algebra)
- MATH 23A (Multivariable Calculus)
- MATH 23B (Multivariable Calculus)
- MATH 100 (Introduction to Proof and Problem Solving)
Students may only declare once they have passed all introductory courses or their equivalent courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better. Students who receive two grades of NP, C-, D+, D, D-, or F in the introductory courses are not eligible to declare in the major or minor. Students who are not eligible to declare may appeal. The advising office will subsequently notify the student, and the college of the decision, no later than 15 business days after the submission of the appeal.
Declaring the Major/Minor
Log into MyUCSC and submit the Petition for Major/Minor via MyUCSC as soon as you have met major qualification requirements and/or reach your declaration deadline quarter, whichever comes first.
- If you are not yet logged into MyUCSC, the petition can also be accessed by going to MyUCSC and navigating to the Student Homepage and selecting the Undergraduate Student eForms tile > Petition for Major/Minor.
Once you submit your petition it can take up to 10 business days to receive a response.
Students petitioning when the campus declaration deadline is imminent (i.e. in their sixth quarter, for students admitted as frosh), will either be approved, denied, or provided with conditions (e.g. completion of some courses with certain grades) that will be resolved within at most one more enrolled quarter, even if they have not completed major qualification (MQ) courses.
Students petitioning for a double major, or a minor, must obtain a signature from the advisor of the major you are already declared in on the Academic Planning Form.
Students declaring a combined Econ/Math major, should visit the Economics department’s Combined Major page.
Appeals
If the petition to declare is denied, the student may appeal, but only once they have satisfied the qualification criteria or otherwise resolved any issues. To appeal, please write a letter to the Mathematics Undergraduate Vice Chair. A student does not need to be finished with the qualification coursework to appeal. The UG Vice Chair will review and respond to appeals within 15 business days. Please submit your appeal letter through this Google form.
