Overview

Humans around the world have developed mathematics for at least 5000 years. An essential tool for science and engineering, mathematics has taken on a life of its own. Mathematicians at UCSC prove theorems, developing new techniques to solve problems across algebra, analysis, and geometry. Modern mathematics lies at the heart of data security, artificial intelligence and data science, modeling physical and biological systems, and more.

At UC Santa Cruz, the Mathematics Department offers four major programs leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics, as well as a minor in Mathematics. A joint Economics/Mathematics B.A. is also available, and administered through the Economics Department. Our degree programs prepare math majors for graduate study, teaching, and industry.

Our department is dedicated to supporting students. Undergraduates belong to the department community, are welcome at tea and seminars, and enjoy their own undergraduate colloquium. To arrange a visit to the department, or for questions about our undergraduate program, please contact the undergraduate advisor at mathadvising@ucsc.edu.

If you are a current undergraduate student, find resources and advising information below.

Mathematics Undergraduate Programs

Mathematics B.S.

The Math B.S. gives students a well-rounded, in-depth education in mathematics. It includes advanced coursework in algebra, analysis, and geometry. It prepares students for jobs across quantitative disciplines, and for graduate study. Math B.S. students are often admitted to top Ph.D. programs in mathematics.

Mathematics Theory and Computation B.S.

This major combines a strong theoretical foundation with computational techniques. Students explore applications of mathematics and mathematical modeling. Math Theory and Computation prepares students for jobs in industry, and for graduate programs in Applied Mathematics.

Mathematics Education B.A.

Mathematics Education majors prepare for a career in K–12 math education. They acquire deep knowledge of subjects taught to K–12 students, including number theory, classical geometry, and the history of mathematics. They may also gain experience in teaching math through the CalTeach program. Mathematics Education majors often pursue a teaching credential and/or a Masters degree in education.

Mathematics B.A.

The Mathematics B.A. is the most flexible major option within the department. Students in this program take advanced courses in algebra, analysis, and geometry, and have flexibility to take other electives to fulfill their degree requirements. This is a great option for students wishing to double major in math and another discipline.

Outside of the department

joint Economics/Mathematics B.A. is available. This degree is administered by the Economics Department. Please contact them for further information.

The Bachelor’s… and beyond The 4+1 pathway is an option that allows students admitted as undergraduates to also get a M.A. in Math, finishing both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in just 5 years.

Advising for the Program

Math’s undergraduate advisor is Ben Fisher. The advisor can provide more information about requirements, policy, and procedures. They can assist with learning support, or connect students with scholarships or special opportunities for research. Also, the advisor helps students draft study plans, and certifies degrees and minors.

The advisor may be contacted via email at mathadvising@ucsc.edu. Sending the advisor an email is the fastest way to get a response.

Additionally, the advisor is available for 20-minute meetings with students during this schedule (— availability subject to change). Appointments are made through Slug Success — use the login button below. For a walkthrough on how to make an appointment, use the help button.

Students are urged to seek advice should problems arise. We encourage you to ask for help if you need it.

Monday: 9:30—11:30 a.m. and 1:30—5:00 p.m.
